San Diego, Feb. 19, 2014 -- CONNECT, a regional program that catalyzes the creation of innovative technology and life sciences products in San Diego County, has selected Peter C. Farrell, Ph.D., for its highest honor, induction into the CONNECT Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. Farrell is being honored for his lifelong dedication to research innovation in the fields of sleep and respiratory medicine, and the impact he has had on the San Diego community.
In 1989, Farrell founded ResMed, a global company headquartered here in San Diego, to advance the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), including sleep apnea, a disease that was, at the time, relatively unknown and unstudied. Farrell has served as Chairman of ResMed since founding the company and also served as ResMed CEO for 21 of the nearly 25 years since the company was formed. Under Farrell’s leadership, the company has grown to operate in 100 countries with manufacturing sites in Australia, France, Singapore and the U.S., and employs over 4,300 people. This year, the company will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Farrell has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the dangers of untreated SDB. An estimated 25 percent of the adult population suffers from some form of SDB, the great majority of whom have yet to be diagnosed and treated. Researchers have linked untreated SDB to hypertension, diabetes, stroke, heart failure, depression and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
In addition to his work with ResMed, Farrell has served the San Diego community through multiple philanthropic efforts including his support of STEM education programs, the Preuss School at UC San Diego, Barrio Logan College, Monarch School, High Tech High, San Diego Center for Children, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, the San Diego Opera, the San Diego Zoo, the Sulpizio Center at UCSD, and both UCSD and USD in general.
Farrell is the eighth inductee into the CONNECT Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. Past inductees are Irwin Jacobs, Walter Zable, Ivor Royston, William Rastetter, J. Robert Beyster, Neal Blue, Linden Blue, Peter Preuss, Gene Ray, Howard “Ted” Green and Ron Taylor. An award luncheon honoring Peter Farrell will be held on Feb. 19, 2014 in La Jolla, CA.
