Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD refers to any lung disease that has the following common effects on the patient:

  • increased resistance to air movement
  • extended expiratory phase of respiration
  • loss of the normal elasticity of the lung

Examples of COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis, with smoking being the main contributor to COPD.1
