Sizing the mask cushion

  1. Familiarize yourself with the cushion-sizing template provided and the cushion sizes available.
  2. Hold the sizing template under the patient’s nose, and use it to determine the most suitable cushion size. Ideally, the outer edge of the patient’s nose should sit on the grey band in the center of the colored margins.
  3. Select the matching cushion and try it on your patient for comfort and fit.

Sizing the mask frame

  1. Use the frame-sizing template provided as a guide to help you choose the correct frame.
  2. If the mask frame falls back over the patient’s head or sits too close to their ears, it is too large. Try a smaller frame.
  3. If the mask frame falls forward over the patient’s head or sits too close to their eyes, it is too small. Try a larger frame.
  4. A well-sized frame will sit centered on the patient’s head, and is neither too close to the eyes or ears.

Mask fitting

  1. Connect the air tubing from the CPAP machine to the mask elbow.
  2. Take the elbow out of the frame by squeezing the quick-release buttons and pulling up.
  3. Ensure the magnetic clips are not connected to the frame. Twist and pull them away from the frame if they are.
  4. Place the cushion under the patient’s nose, and pull the headgear and frame over their head.
  5. Bring the lower headgear straps under the patient’s ears and attach the magnetic clips to the frame on both sides.
  6. Unfasten the upper headgear straps and pull them evenly until the mask is secure and comfortable.
  7. Reattach the elbow with the air tubing to the frame.

Some helpful tips

Mask assembly

  1. Ensure all the mask components and parts are together.
  2. Insert each of the frame connectors into the cushion until they click into place.
  3. Connect the elbow to the top of the frame until it clicks into place.
  4. Hold the headgear so that the ResMed logo is upright and facing outwards.
  5. Insert each of the upper headgear straps into the frame and fold the fastening tabs over to secure.
  6. If the elbow ring detaches from the frame, slide it back into the opening with the widest part of the rim facing downwards.

Managing mask leak

  1. If air is escaping the mask cushion from any area other than the vent, try the following steps to locate and stop the leak.
  2. If any is escaping from different areas of the cushion, try pulling it away from your patient’s face and letting it reseal itself.
  3. If your patient feels air is escaping from the top half of the cushion, try adjusting the upper headgear straps until there is a secure seal.
  4. Ensure the frame is centered on the patient’s head and the air tubing is not pulling on their mask.

Daily mask cleaning

  1. Follow the mask disassembly instructions to disconnect the mask cushion.
  2. Soak the cushion in warm water and a mild liquid detergent.
  3. Hand wash the cushion inside and out with a soft bristle brush. Pay particular attention to cleaning the vent holes.
  4. Rinse the cushion under running tap water.
  5. Leave the cushion to air dry away from direct sunlight.
