Understanding COPD

I am a COPD Patient

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes airflow from the lungs to be obstructed.²

People with COPD struggle to breathe and often have a chronic cough. Over time the airways become increasingly blocked, making it more difficult to breathe. As the disease progresses, some patients have a greater difficulty eliminating carbon dioxide from their lungs.

There is no cure for COPD. But treatments are available, including medications, oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation to help people live longer and improve their quality of life.

I am a Health Professional

COPD is one of the leading causes of death in the United States.A 2012 study estimated that hospitalizations for acute exacerbations of COPD costs the U.S. healthcare system approximately $14 billion a year.³
