Confident care

Astral™ has been designed to make delivering effective therapy simpler, while providing the tools for easy monitoring. With Astral, patients can keep the same ventilator as their condition progresses because it offers the flexibility to change therapy modes and configurations.

Astral provides invasive and noninvasive therapy, and offers a variety of volume and pressure therapy modes for adult and pediatric patients. It supports single limb leak, single limb valve and double limb circuits with the use of interchangeable circuit adapters.

Delivering personalized therapy

ResMed’s intelligent Volume-Assured Pressure Support, or iVAPS, is a unique, volume-assurance mode that intelligently and automatically tailors therapy to patients’ individual breathing needs. It targets each patient’s alveolar ventilation, and auto-adjusts to maintain that target and stabilize ventilation. ResMed devices featuring iVAPS technology — along with an intelligent Backup Rate (iBR) — allow you to provide optimal care for those whose condition is likely to change during therapy, such as patients with neuromuscular disease (NMD), obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Versatile treatment options

Astral Steve Lounge

Astral’s versatile capabilities mean that patients can use the same ventilator through every stage of their condition. This continuity provides familiarity and assurance for patients, while making operation simpler for clinicians and caregivers.

Suited to a broad range of conditions

With a pressure of up to 50 cm H2O, tidal volumes from 50–2500 mL and respiratory rates of up to 80 BPM, Astral can be used for a wide range of respiratory disorders in adult and pediatric patients, including:

  • Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS)

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • Neuromuscular disease (NMD)

  • Restrictive lung disease

  • Spinal cord injuries (SCI)

A wide choice of leak and valve modes

Single limb leak, single limb valve, and double limb circuits are available to suit many different adult and pediatric patients. Astral offers excellence in ventilation for invasive and noninvasive applications and a full suite of therapy modes including:

  • (A)CV: Assisted volume-controlled ventilation

  • P(A)CV: Assisted pressure-controlled ventilation (with optional safety tidal volume)

  • P-SIMV: Pressure-Synchronized Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation

  • V-SIMV: Volume-Synchronized Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation

  • PS: Pressure Support (with optional safety tidal volume)

  • ST: Spontaneous Timed ventilation (with backup rate)

  • P(A)C: Assisted pressure-controlled ventilation

  • CPAP: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure

  • iVAPS: Intelligent Volume-Assured Pressure Support (iVAPS is indicated for patients weighing more than 66lbs (30kg)

Advanced ResMed technologies

Screen Clinical Mode

Astral uses a number of ResMed technologies to deliver therapy in both valve and leak ventilation. It offers the flexibility to easily change therapy and configuration, so patients can continue with the same device as their condition changes.

ResMed is committed to excellence in ventilation and to helping ensure that patients are comfortable during therapy. A number of advanced technologies to enhance patient–device synchrony are included in Astral:

  • Vsync – When using leak circuits, Vsync leak management technology allows the device to estimate a patient's respiratory flow and tidal volume if there's an unintentional leak and automatically compensates for it.

  • NIV+ – When using valve circuits, ResMed’s exclusive trigger sensitivity technology NIV+, detects even the slightest change in a patient’s breathing pattern. It also identifies the earliest instance of leak and promptly reacts to maintain precise triggering.

  • TiControl™ – TiControl lets you set minimum and maximum inspiratory time limits on either side of the patient’s ideal spontaneous inspiratory time. In combination with adjustable rise times and adjustable trigger and cycle sensitivities, TiControl works to enhance patient–ventilator synchrony.

  • Adjustable trigger and cycle – The trigger and cycle sensitivity features allows further customization – at the beginning and end of each breath, further improving patient–ventilator synchronization.

Low-flow oxygen

Up to 30 L/min of supplemental oxygen can be delivered via the low-flow oxygen inlet, allowing Astral to meet the needs of a broader range of patients. Astral’s integrated FiO2 sensor  allows delivered oxygen to be measured accurately and alarms to be set in case oxygen levels drop.1 – 2

Customizable programs

Customizable programs

Astral offers the flexibility of customizable programs that clinicians can preconfigure,3 so patients and caregivers can easily select the right therapy at the right time. For example, when the patient moves from night-time therapy to mouthpiece ventilation during the day, the ventilator can quickly be switched to the appropriate therapy settings.

Easy monitoring

Clinical Monitoring

Patient data is critical to making the right clinical decisions and it provides the necessary insight to ensure optimal patient–device synchrony. The large, easy-to-read color touch screen displays information clearly, whether it's trended data for quick analysis or real-time pressure and flow waveforms.

Astral displays:

  • Real-time pressure and flow waveforms

  • FiO2 and SpO2 monitoring4

  • Historical summary data:
    • Leak

    • MV

    • PIP

    • Vt

    • RR

    • Ti

    • SpO2, Pulse Rate, FiO2 (if in use)

Detailed and summary data can be downloaded with ResScan™, ResMed’s patient data management solution, using a USB stick. This means a patient’s condition can be reviewed during a home visit and shared with other healthcare professionals.

Alarms active list

Astral provides both audible and visual alerts when attention is required to ensure patient safety. Both adjustable and fixed alarms are based on high-, medium- and low-priority categories. Non-essential alarms can be switched off if not required. Alarms include:

  • Power alarms

  • Pressure alarms

  • Ventilation monitoring alarms

  • Oximetry alarms

  • FiO2 alarms

  • Circuit alarms

Remote Alarm II

Astral is compatible with ResMed’s Remote Alarm II. Caregivers and medical staff can leave a patient’s bedside with the security of knowing they will be alerted with audible and visual signals if an alarm is triggered on the ventilation device. An additional remote alarm can be connected for monitoring from other locations.
