Diabetes & Sleep Apnoea
If you are one of the 2.6 million people in the UK who suffer from type 2 diabetes then evidence suggests that you are at a higher risk also having some form of sleep disordered breathing. In fact, at least 70% of people living with type 2 diabetes exhibit sleep disordered breathing1 such as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) which can result in poor sleep, daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and other serious health problems.
Further studies have found that the percentage of people living with diabetes who also have OSA to be anywhere between 17%2 and 48%3. And, while obesity is a contributing factor to both OSA and type 2 diabetes, studies have shown that OSA affects your glucose and insulin4 levels even if you’re not overweight. If you do suffer from OSA, treating this condition may help you manage your glucose levels2.
OSA - The Signs and Symptoms
Usually, people with OSA realise they may have the condition because their partner notices them snore or stop breathing during sleep. Other common signs and symptoms to watch out for include:
- Extreme sleepiness
- Frequent loud snoring
- Stopping breathing during sleep
- Choking episodes during sleep
- Morning headaches
- Frequent trips to the bathroom during the night
- Waking with a dry mouth/sore throat
- Waking unrefreshed despite a 'normal' nights sleep
- Difficulty concentrating, irritability
- High blood pressure
If you have type 2 diabetes and/or suspect you may be suffering from sleep disordered breathing including OSA, it's very important that you to talk to your doctor. We’re always happy to talk to you too and we have Centres for Healthy Sleep in Abingdon and in London.
