PETER C. FARRELL
PhD, DSc, AM – Founder and Executive Chairman
Peter Farrell is founder and executive chairman of ResMed and has been a director of the Company since its inception in June 1989. He served as chief executive officer from July 1990 until December 2007 and from February 2011 until March 2013, when he took up the role again of executive chairman.
From July 1984 to June 1989, Dr. Farrell served as vice president, research and development at various subsidiaries of Baxter Healthcare, and from August 1985 to June 1989, he also served as managing director of the Baxter Center for Medical Research. From January 1978 to December 1989, he was foundation director of the Graduate School for Biomedical Engineering at the University of New South Wales where he currently serves as a visiting professor and as chairman of the UNSW Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Dr. Farrell also serves on several faculty Advisory Boards at UCSD: the Rady Business School, the Jacobs Engineering School and Health Sciences. He holds a B.E. in chemical engineering with honors from the University of Sydney, an S.M. in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Ph.D. in chemical and biomedical engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle and a D.Sc. from the University of New South Wales for research contributions relating to treatment with the artificial kidney.
Dr. Farrell was named 1998 San Diego Entrepreneur of the Year for Health Sciences, Australian Entrepreneur of the Year in 2001 and US National Entrepreneur of the Year for 2005 in Health Sciences. In July 2010, he was named chairman of the Executive Council of the Harvard Medical School Division of Sleep Medicine. In 2012, he joined the Board of Trustees of the Scripps Research Institute. In addition to ResMed, Dr. Farrell is a director of NuVasive, Inc., a Nasdaq-listed company which develops and markets products for the surgical treatment of spine disorders and is non-executive chair of QRxPharma, a clinical-stage specialty pharmaceutical company listed on the ASX. He is a Fellow or Honorary Fellow of several professional bodies, including the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and is active in philanthropy primarily through the Farrell Family Foundation. Dr. Farrell was president of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Contemporary Arts, San Diego (2009-2011). In 2011, Dr. Farrell was named a Gordon Fellow by UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering and in 2012 was admitted as a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
MICHAEL FARRELL
Chief Executive Officer
Michael J. Farrell became chief executive officer in March 2013. Mr. Farrell has served as the Company’s president – Americas since May 2011. He was previously senior vice president, strategic business unit – sleep from July 2007 to May 2011, and before that role he was vice president, marketing for the Americas from June 2005 through July 2007, and vice president, business development. Before joining the Company in September 2000, Mr. Farrell worked in management consulting and biotechnology, as well as in chemicals and steel manufacturing at Arthur D. Little, Genzyme Corporation, The Dow Chemical Company, and BHP Billiton. Mr. Farrell sits on the board of directors of the American Association for Homecare, the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, and the New Children’s Museum, San Diego. Mr. Farrell holds a bachelor of engineering, with first-class honors, from the University of New South Wales, a master of science in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an M.B.A. from the MIT Sloan School of Management. In addition to his appointment as chief executive officer, Mr. Farrell was appointed to serve as a director on the Board effective as of March 1, 2013.
ROBERT DOUGLAS
President and Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Douglas added president to his role of chief operating officer in March 2013 and together with ResMed chief executive officer, Mick Farrell, holds full operational responsibility for ResMed and its subsidiaries. Mr. Douglas has served as chief operating officer since September 2011, and his former roles with the Company include president – Asia Pacific and chief, global supply operations from May 2011 through September 2011, responsible for global manufacturing and commercial distribution and sales operations in the Asia Pacific region; chief operating officer – Asia Pacific from June 2008 through May 2011; chief operating officer – Sydney from November 2005 through June 2008, responsible for the Company’s manufacturing and research and development; vice president of operations from 2003 - 2005, responsible for the Company’s manufacturing; and vice president of respiratory and cardiac business from 2002 – 2003. Mr. Douglas first joined the Company in 2001 in the role of vice president of corporate marketing. Mr. Douglas has a master of business administration from Macquarie University, a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with first-class honors and a B.Sc. (computer sciences) from the University of New South Wales, Sydney.
KAREN BORG
President, Asia-Pacific
Ms. Borg was appointed as president, APAC in January 2012. Her career prior to joining ResMed has both commercial and cultural diversity and covers a span of functional expertise and experience, including strategic and global marketing, M&A, sales and general management. Over the last 20 years, Ms. Borg has both lived and worked in Australia, the United Kingdom, Russia, Taiwan and the USA. She has worked for well-known organizations including Nestle, Revlon, Goodman Fielder and Seagram and since 2003 in key leadership roles for Johnson & Johnson, most recently for 5 years as vice president, Global Marketing for Advanced Sterilization Products, a company specializing in hospital infection prevention solutions based in Southern California. She has extensive experience in global healthcare with deep knowledge of commercial drivers and key stakeholders in both emerging and mature markets. Ms. Borg holds a B.A. from the University of Sydney.
DON DARKIN
President, SDB Strategic Business Unit
Don Darkin has been president, Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) Strategic Business unit since May 2011 and senior vice president, Strategic Business Unit - Patient Interfaces since July 2007. Before these positions, Mr. Darkin held several senior roles within ResMed. He joined ResMed in August 1999 as vice president, Product Development. In May 2005, he became director of operations in France for ventilation, and subsequently served as vice president, Business Divisions, and senior vice president, Global Product Development. Before working at ResMed, Mr. Darkin served as vice president of Operations for Ambri Pty (Molecular Engineering and Biotechnology) Ltd. Australia, and vice president, Product Development for Telectronics Medical Systems Australia and USA. Mr. Darkin is identified as an inventor or co-inventor on 81 granted patents worldwide. Mr. Darkin was educated in the U.K. in mechanical engineering and has further professional management training at the University of New South Wales and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
JIM HOLLINGSHEAD
President, Americas
Jim Hollingshead was appointed president, Americas in March 2013. Mr. Hollingshead joined the Company in March 2010 as vice president of strategy and business development. In August 2011, his role was expanded to include the leadership of ResMed ventures and initiatives, the unit within the Company responsible for growing early stage businesses.
Before joining the Company, Mr. Hollingshead spent 18 years in strategy consulting, where he worked with senior executives across a wide range of industries. From September 2008 to February 2010, he was a senior partner in the strategy and life sciences practices in Deloitte Consulting, based in San Francisco. Before that Mr. Hollingshead was managing partner, west coast for Monitor Group, a leading global strategy consulting firm. While at Monitor Group, Mr. Hollingshead worked in various offices around the world, and successfully launched and ran three different practices, including a pan-European marketing strategy practice based in London.
Mr. Hollingshead holds an AB in History and International Relations with Highest Distinction from Stanford University, and an MA and PhD in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley, where he was awarded a graduate student Fellowship by the National Science Foundation.
FRANK LACAGNINA
Chief Information Officer
Mr. Lacagnina joined ResMed as vice president of Information Technology - Americas in September 2010. He was promoted to chief information officer in February 2012. Over the past 28 years, Mr. Lacagnina has led IT organizations within semiconductor manufacturing, financial, government, health insurance and medical device organizations. Earlier in his career, he spent 14 years introducing innovative technical business solutions for Motorola Inc.'s Semiconductor Product Sector, and also at the Motorola spin-off company ON Semiconductor, where his last role was IT director of Business Applications. He also spent over three years as CIO for a sovereign Indian nation in Scottsdale Arizona, where his IT organization enabled and helped lead significant growth in services, including implementation of new public safety, justice administration, patient management and other critical services and systems. Mr. Lacagnina specializes in management of global IT organizations, with a focus on organization turnaround and efficiency. Mr. Lacagnina holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Arizona, with a major in Management of Information Systems. He also earned an Associate of Applied Sciences degree Computer Programmer/Analyst from Pima Community College in Tucson Arizona. He has completed further studies in leadership and management from the Thunderbird International School of Business and the W.P. Cary Business College at Arizona State University.
GEOFF NEILSON
President, Respiratory Care Strategic Business Unit
Geoff Neilson has been president, Respiratory Care Strategic Business Unit since May 2011. Mr. Neilson joined ResMed in 2006, becoming vice president, Sleep Product Development in July 2007. He was appointed vice president, Ventilation Strategic Business Unit in March 2010 before relocating to the USA in Sept 2010. Prior to joining ResMed, Mr. Neilson was chief executive officer of Milvella Ltd (Ophthalmic devices) and general manager of Magnetic Resonance Diagnostic Technologies. He was director, Clinical Studies for Telectronics Pacing Systems (USA) and also managed Product Development for Telectronics Australia. He has a B.Sc (Hons I) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.
DAVID PENDARVIS
Chief Administrative Officer and Global General Counsel
David Pendarvis was appointed chief administrative officer in May, 2011 and remains Global General Counsel. He had been senior vice president, Organizational Development since February 2005. Mr. Pendarvis has also been Global General Counsel since he joined ResMed in September 2002, and from February 2003, has been Corporate Secretary. From September 2000 until September 2002, Mr. Pendarvis was a partner in the law firm of Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich LLP, where he specialized in intellectual property and general business litigation. Until September 2000 he was a partner with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he began working in 1986. From 1984 until 1986 he was a law clerk to the Hon. J. Lawrence Irving, US District Judge, Southern District of California. Mr. Pendarvis is also a director on the Board of Sequenom, Inc. He holds a B.A. from Rice University; a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Texas School of Law; and a Masters of Science in Executive Leadership from the University of San Diego.
ANNE REISER
President, Europe
Anne Reiser was appointed president, Europe in March 2012. She had served as ResMed's chief operating officer - France since 2007, after joining as the sales director in 2006. Ms. Reiser demonstrated a great track record in building and leading the successful French organization, with both strong sales growth and market share increase. Prior to joining ResMed, her entire career experience had been in the medical device industry (Mölnlycke, Zimmer, American Home Product). More recently, she worked for Hollister and Medtronic with responsibilities covering both France and finally southern European countries. Ms Reiser has a Masters degree from Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Clermont-Fd (Business School), and a Bachelor degree of Law from the University of Clermont-Ferrand.
BRETT SANDERCOCK
Chief Financial Officer
Brett Sandercock has been chief financial officer since January 1, 2006. From November 2004 until December 31, 2005, Mr. Sandercock was vice president, Treasury and Finance. Before that, from 1998 to November 2004, Mr. Sandercock was Group Accountant and then Controller. From March 1996 to August 1998 he was manager, Financial Accounting and Group Reporting at Norton Abrasives, a division of the French multi-national, Saint Gobain. Mr. Sandercock also held finance and accounting roles from November 1994 to March 1996 at Health Care of Australia, a large private hospital operator in Australia. From 1989 to 1994, Mr. Sandercock worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Sydney, specializing in audits of clients predominantly focused on distribution and manufacturing, financial services and technology. Mr. Sandercock holds a B.Ec. from Macquarie University and is a Certified Chartered Accountant.
