Vsync is a leak management algorithm and the product of ResMed’s extensive experience in NIV. Vsync monitors and compensates for unintentional mask leak, so that patients receive their prescribed therapy pressure. Working in sync with TiControl, Vsync ensures reliable breath detection (patient–device synchronisation) even in conditions of high leak.

How it works

Vsync leak management algorithm

Unintentional leak varies with changes to mask pressure or seal. Vsync automatically compensates for such leak by:

  • monitoring pressure and flow
  • using this information to continuously estimate the size of the leak opening and the air flowing through it
  • calculating the patient respiratory flow by subtracting the estimated leak flow from the overall flow measured by the device’s flow sensor.

Unlike very basic leak compensation models that are slow to respond, Vsync’s advanced technology tracks fast-changing and unstable leaks. This ensures that patient flow estimation is always accurate, so that the device responds to every breath with optimum synchrony.

Why leak management is essential

A major challenge for noninvasive ventilators is maintaining synchrony with a patient's respiration in the presence of unintentional leak. Unintentional leak may arise due to factors such as poor mask fit and fast pressure transitions. Leak impacts triggering and cycling by obscuring the patient's true respiratory flow. The increased flow from a leak can be interpreted as patient inhalation and cause the ventilator to falsely trigger (i.e. transition from EPAP to IPAP).

Vsync leak management adjusts therapy to account for the changing leak. In doing so, it improves trigger and cycle accuracy, resulting in improved synchronisation. TiControl provides further backup against leak by enabling clinicians to set minimum and maximum inspiratory time limits.

What this means for the patient and the physician?

The patient receives the most comfortable and effective therapy possible. The physician can be assured that the patient is receiving their required therapy pressure and that all the efficacy data that they are accessing is accurate.

Vsync technology is unique to ResMed therapy devices.
